Print Utilities
You use the print utilities to print system files. Many of the functions available in the ( Z) screen are no longer applicable. In the Print Utilities portion of the screen, the following functions are available:
[D1] Disk Directory
[D2] Disk File
[D6] Document
Double-click
.
When the Keyop Menu opens, double-click
. The ( Z) screen opens.
In the Enter Utility Type field, type D.
Use the Enter Subset Number field to specify what to print.
Type 1 to print disk directories. Go to Printing Disk Directories.
Type 2 to print disk files. Go to Printing Disk Files.
Type 6 to print documents. Go to Printing Documents.
This function prints the VTOC (Volume Table of Contents), which lists the size (in cylinders) of each file, and the overall usage of the specified disk unit.
At the Enter Unit # prompt, enter the unit number to print a VTOC for. Press Enter.
The Enter Printer prompt appears. Press Enter to accept the default printer, P1, or enter the logical name for another printer.
Using this function, you can print up to 502 characters of a file in the exact format that the file is stored in. Printing a file in this format is harmless, but this version is probably meaningless to most users, since the record layouts are often difficult to understand.
At the Enter File Name prompt, enter the name of the file to print. If you do not completely fill the field, press Tab.
In the Enter Unit # field, enter the unit number where the specified file is located.
The Print the Entire File prompt appears. To print the entire file, type Y. Go to Step 5.
To not print the entire file, type N.
The Enter Starting Keys prompt appears. Enter the primary key.
To enter additional key fields, press Tab. You can specify up to five key fields.
The Enter Width to Print prompt appears. Enter the maximum number of characters allowed for the type size and width of paper you are using.
Note: If the number of characters exceeds the width of the paper, then each line wraps around to the next line. For example, 80 characters fit on a page using 10-character-per-inch type, 96 characters fit on a page using 12-character-per-inch type, and 132 characters fit on a page using 17-character-per-inch type.
The Enter Printer prompt appears. Press Enter to accept the default printer, P1, or enter the logical name for another printer.
You can print word processing files using either the [D6] Document function or the [B7] Word Processor function in the ( Z) screen, or by entering an exclamation point (!) from the Master Menu.
If you print word processing files by using the [D6] Document function, you can print only certain line numbers, rather than the entire document. If you print a document using the (!) screen, you can include embedded codes.
The Enter File Name prompt appears. Enter the name of the file to print. If you do not completely fill the field, press Tab.
In the Enter Unit # field, enter the unit number where the specified file is located.
The Print the Entire File prompt appears. To print the entire file, type Y. Go to Step 6.
To not print the entire file, type N.
The Enter Starting Keys prompt appears. Enter the line number of the first line to print.
The Enter Ending Keys prompt appears. Enter the line number of the last line to print.
The Enter Number of Copies to Print prompt appears. Press Enter to print one copy of the file, or enter the number of copies to print.
The Print Line Numbers prompt appears. To print the line numbers on the left-side of the page, type Y.
Note: If you specify Y, you may lose up to three characters per line.
To not print line numbers, type N.
The Enter Printer prompt appears. Press Enter to accept the default printer, P1, or enter the logical name for another printer.
The Align Paper to Top of First Page and Press Any Key When Ready prompt appears. After making sure the printer is online and contains paper, press Enter.
