Volume serials are the logical names assigned to DDMS units on your system. Units are folders that hold DDMS information. For example, unit 4 is assigned to the volume serial SR (system residence). This is the unit that stores your program libraries. Volume serials are used to determine where to create groups of files on your system. For example, you may use volume serial IN for your inventory files and volume HI for your history files. You specify the volume serial for each group of files through the text-based (LØ) Global Master Parameters screen.

You can view your volume serials in the TBL Configuration window. If necessary, you can also add new volumes. For example, you may need to add new volumes when you copy existing information to your DDMS system.

In addition, you may also need to change the default unit settings until they are properly assigned for your business. For example, if you currently store your inventory files on unit 7 and the DDMS system has the inventory files assigned to unit 5, you will want to modify the units so that unit 7 stores your inventory files and unit 5 stores the appropriate information for you business.
