Understanding Multiple Units of Measure
To help you sell items in individual units, you can maintain multiple units of measure for a single item. For example, with a retail store, there may be certain items you break up to sell in individual units. You probably buy file folders by the box or carton. You might sell them in those units on the commercial side but break them down to sell individually at your retail store.
You can also set up multiple units of measure for items you sell to EDI customers. Setting up EDI units of measure automates the process of converting your customer's item numbers and units of measure to your item numbers and units.
Note: We recommend that you limit the items you convert to only those that require multiple units. Once these items are converted, the conversion is permanent.
There are two ways to use multiple units of measure:
Items with information units only display each of the available units in order entry. The order writer can use these as reference units, but can only sell the item in one of the two selling units.
Items with two selling units and one information unit let you sell the item in the two selling units. The information unit, however, is for viewing purposes only. The two selling units display in Order Entry. When a selling unit is placed on an order, the correct price for the unit is automatically calculated.
There are three ways you can set up an item with information and selling units of measure:
You can manually set up multiple units of measure while manually adding the item in the Item window. When you do this, you do not have to run the (+EW) conversion program. For information about setting up an item with multiple units of measure, see Adding a Multiple Units of Measure Item.
You can load multiple units of measure for the items with an O/PUS load. You must then run the conversion program in the (+EW) screen. This program lets you convert the items to either an item with two selling units or an item with information units only.
You can use the (+EW) conversion program to set up the units of measure for existing items with a unit of measure that was not loaded with the O/PUS load.
Note: If you do not set up the units of measure when manually adding an item, the item becomes an existing item. You must call ECi for authorization before you perform the (+EW) conversion. For information about the O/PUS load and using the (+EW) screen, see Understanding the O/PUS Load with Multiple Units of Measure and Parameters.
Multiple Units of Measure for EDI
Your EDI customer may use item numbers and units of measure that do not match the item numbers and units of measure in your Item database. Setting up the EDI units of measure automates the process of converting your customer's item numbers and units of measure to your item numbers and units. See Adding a Multiple Units of Measure Item for EDI.
