About Item Aliases
An item alias is a second name for an item. There are several uses for aliases.
Create aliases using the numbers or names your customers prefer.
Use aliases to link UPC (Universal Product Code) numbers to your stock numbers.
Use aliases to retrieve items for retail Order Entry. You can build an alias index that links the alias item to the original item. When an order-writer enters the alias at Order Entry, the original item is retrieved.
Use aliases to create bar code numbers for your items. The user-defined bar code number is entered as an alias, which is linked to the original item number.
You create and maintain the following types of aliases through the Item Alias dialog box and by setting parameters:
Customer aliases apply only to the customer for which they are created. They print on standard pick tickets and invoices along with the true item number. Each customer can have a unique list of alias numbers. Therefore, a single cataloged item number may have several aliases.
Common aliases apply to all of your customers. They use a customer ID of Common. When you use a Common alias, the alias number does not print on standard pick tickets and invoices.
UPC aliases, see About UPC Aliases.
Print aliases apply to all of your customers. They use a customer ID of Print. Unlike Common aliases, however, Print aliases print on standard pick tickets and invoices along with the true item numbers.
EDI aliases apply to only the customer for which they are created. Your EDI customer may use item numbers and units of measure that do not match the item numbers and units of measure of your items. Setting up EDI aliases automates the process of converting your customer's item numbers and units of measure to your item numbers and units of measure.
You access the Item Alias dialog box in several ways:
From the DDMS Master Menu, click Databases then select Item Alias.
From the Item database, click View then select Item Alias.
From the Item database, click
